Leo on the beach Sidi Kaouki

Morocco travel tips

A good first or last stop in Morocco before/after the boat in Tanger Med is the town of Asilah. When you take the toll road you can only pay cash and euros are accepted. Handy to have a €20 note with you.

If you maybe want to drink alcohol, it is easier and cheaper to bring it from Spain. At the customs, they mainly check for weapons and drones, not for alcohol. You can also just not drink for a while or buy alcohol at Carrefour.

In Morocco, I always go to campsites, they are relatively cheap (around €7) and the police are often not okay with free parking. At the beach, it is usually forbidden to stay overnight.

If you use gas bottles? Have them filled in Algeciras. In Morocco that is not possible, officially not in Spain either, but on P4Night you will find addresses.

Boat to Morocco!

On the boat you have to fill out a form per person and the form is at the reception. With this form you get a stamp (90 days visa) at the customs. The customs usually sits at a table in the restaurant.

At customs on land you will receive a card regarding your car, please note this is important so don’t lose it!

Artists’ village Asilah

Everything goes well and smoothly on board. I meet other travelers and get a tip for a campsite in Asilah. Paying the toll with euros works and I immediately have dirhams to pay the farmacy for an inflamed tooth. Haa, they also know which campsite I have to go to, I don’t have a SIM card yet and therefore no navigation. Wouldn’t it be great if it was this easy every day?

Leo and I walk along the boulevard, Asilah turns out to be a nice town! It is quiet because it is Friday, the holy day. City wall, medina and all kinds of different murals, many artists live in Asilah. I meet Louise and Michael from Ireland and we drink coffee with delicious Moroccan cookies. This traditional bakery has a huge oven, here I buy freshly baked bread..

Moulay Bousselham Lagoon

On to the lagoon in Moulay Bousselham. The host Kbir is very friendly and his walled garden is full of campers. It is warm next to a wall and not a breath of wind! In the evening we eat delicious tajine together.

The next day we go bird watching in the lagoon with a somewhat rickety rowing boat. I was really looking forward to it but unfortunately we have fog. The crossing cows in the fog and the flamingos are beautiful! After our boat trip we have plenty of sun again…

Mohammedia suburb of Casablanca

In Mohammedia I am at the campsite where I was before. Chatting with many acquaintances, nice walks with Leo and enjoying the amazing view of the sea.

Stopover Oualidia

The beach at Oualidia is fantastic! Fishermen sell the freshly caught fish and people enjoy themselves on the beach, there are big waves today. It is Saturday and the relaxation area and food stalls next to the camper place are full, the locals are having a good time. And then suddenly it is completely quiet and you can sleep in silence.

My favorite Sidi Kaouki

A long drive to Essaouira, wow it always takes longer than you expect. Stop at Carrefour, drive another 20 km to Sidi Kaouki and then a hospitable welcome by Ali, he still recognizes me. Coffees and a nice walk along the beach. Leo plays with a street dog and runs until he is tired.

We enjoy walking on the beach to the max, it is so wonderful here! Leo has a blonde girlfriend she comes to sleep in my chair by our car every day. In the evening I dream away at a gorgeous sunset!

Stray dogs

Benina from Belgium has adopted 4 dogs and she also takes care of about 20 dogs on the beach. She has been living in Morocco for years, this woman is doing a great job!

We meet on the beach of Sidi Kaouki and Leo plays with his new dog friends.

Authentic Essaouira

I share a taxi with other travellers because we are going to Essaouira today! Pay €10 return for Leo and me, we are picked up at the campsite and brought back, perfect.

In the medina of Essaouira live many cats, they are sleeping everywhere. We walk on the city wall and watch the hustle and bustle in the fishing port. Essaouira also has a splendid beach. Liveliness and a relaxed atmosphere at the same time.

I eat Shakshuka for the first time, an omelette prepared in Berber style (see main photo). Essaouira is really a super nice city, recommended!

On the way to Taghazout

A magnificent road to Taghazout, wow! Through the inland and nature. Also many small villages along the way where you are allowed to drive a maximum of 60 km per hour. Watch your speed, because the police actively checks here.

Then do some shopping in Agadir, driving in Agadir is a spectacle! You sometimes think in a taxi, gosh I’m glad I don’t have to drive. Well haha I have to now in this chaos and it’s going surprisingly well. Cars, buses, mopeds, people crossing unexpectedly everywhere and no one staying in their own lane. I swerve from left to right and honk like a local 😂

Cool down

Camping La Palmeraie in Tifnit is a superb campsite, everything is clean and there is also a swimming pool.

I dive in because it is very warm at the moment.

In the meantime I have decided to make an adventurous journey this winter across the Sahara to West Africa; South Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal. We are now travelling further to South Morocco and Western Sahara, will you travel with us?
