From Navarra we travel further to La Rioja, I know this region from my pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and I have positive memories of it!
Castle Arnedo
On the way to the mountain village of Arnedillo we stop for lunch at the village of Arnedo. We walk along the river and take a look at the castle on the hill.
Mountain village Arnedillo
In Arnedillo we walk between the olive trees and from the camper place I have an amazing view of the mountains and the village in the valley. Then we walk all the way down to the ice cold river with the natural hot pools, cool!
Ventosa Camino walking
Walking the Camino near the village of Ventosa! A nice route with a view of the vineyard. On the way I speak to a few pilgrims, they are on their way to Santiago de Compostela, so nice! In 2017 I also walked this route myself.
Afterwards we enjoy the evening sun and I drink a local red Rioja wine on the terrace of wine bar 1583.
Yuso & Suso Monastery
Today is monastery day: Yuso & Suso Monastery. In the large Yuso monastery, guided tours are given (€8) of about an hour, which I find too long to leave Leo alone. So I look at the outside and the courtyard. A tour guide also lets me take a quick look inside, great!
Leo and I then walk through the forest to the Suso monastery. This monastery is much smaller but I am allowed to look around there by myself. Wonderful, I love monasteries! It is also a great walk through the forest. When I arrive in the village I can choose from several terraces. Coffee & tortilla patata for me and we get water & cookies for Leo, very cute!
Overnight in Castanares de Rioja next to a tapas bar, ideal! This time I take a white Rioja wine with tapas, it was a splendid day!
Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela
Hiking in the mountains at Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela! Wide views and you can spot many vultures here.
Old town Segovia
What chaos at this place to stay in Segovia, music, people talking, lots of cars, garbage trucks and pruning gardeners. A city parking lot… Because today I am going to visit the old city of Segovia. And I am really looking forward to it!
First to the gigantic aqueduct and then the cathedral, this is also gigantic! The fairytale castle Alcazar and we see much more, we walk around the whole day. I have seen so much, this is a superb city to visit!
Old town Avila
In Avila, there is a special event going on at the cathedral. The streets are full of people waiting for the procession to pass by. We weave our way through them. Along the city walls, the cathedral, Los Cuatro Postes, Basilica de San Vicente, Plaza Mercado Chico and more. I drink a coffee and still no procession.
Okay, I’ll let that pass. Oops, we leave a little too late because suddenly a lot of fireworks that really scares Leo. Quickly get away from here and after a cookie everything is fine again.
Old town Ciudad Rodrigo
In the medieval town of Ciudad Rodrigo there is a beautiful cathedral. On the old city wall we take a lovely walk. In the morning we walk on the city wall again, the luxury of walking on new places again and again, that is enjoyment, isn’t it?
We enjoyed ourselves in Spain again! We have now reached the border and are travelling further into the interior of Portugal, will you travel with us?
