Navarra, Spain

Bera, Basque Country

After a nice trip along the French west coast we travel further in Spain. We love Spain, we have been there before and Leo was even born in Spain! This time we visit a new region, Navarra!

Basque Country

Two hours drive and we’re already in the Spanish Basque Country! In the village of Bera we take a nice walk along the river.

Beautiful houses here! It reminds me of Austria, just like the temperature, it is now chilly outside in the evening.

Lekunberri

THE road to Pamplona is closed so I postpone Pamplona and change my plan. A wonderful route from Lesaka via Leitza to Lekunberri. Had forgotten how great it is to drive in the mountains.

At Lekunberri an old railway line has been transformed into a long walking path, great! Today we walked towards Malkorra, tomorrow morning we will go the other way.

Río Irati

In Agoitz there is a free camper place in a park next to the river Río Irati. There are several nice walking paths but we enjoy the walk along the river with clear (green) water the most.

Monastery of Leyre

In the Monastery of Leyre is a mass going on, it is a mystical little monastery in the mountains. We walk up the mountain and as a reward we get a stunning view of the monastery and the lake! Then a café solo and my first tortilla patata omelette, that’s so delicious!

Javier Castle

Not far from the monastery is the impressive Javier Castle. Noble families have lived in this ancient castle. The castle garden is great for actively (hilly) walks in the area.

Canyon de Lumbier

A gorge with many vultures, superb nature with a constructed walking path. There are also all kinds of other small birds to spot and in the background you hear the sound of the flowing river. Paradise!

Olite

After a few rainy days, the day in Olite starts with sun, yeah! Have a quick breakfast and then we will visit the photogenic village of Olite. Castle-Palace of Olite is located in the middle of the village and is a very big castle. Olite has a city square with terraces and nice shops. There are also several beautiful churches to visit.

Bardenas Reales National Park

Bardenas Reales is a desert area with hills, ravines and rocks. Some rocks have unique shapes. The most famous rock is the Cabezo de Castildetierra, the rock with the point. It is possible to drive all the way to this spot with the camper, sublime!

A lovely drive through the desert and only the last part is unpaved. Serene silence and fantastic nature, what more could you want? But in the meantime military exercises are also being held and one jet fighter after another flies over 🙂

We enjoyed Navarra and travel further via the regions of La Rioja and Castilla y Leon towards Portugal. Will you travel with us?
