Morocco tour desert

Dry river Tata city

After a two-week tour in the inland of Morocco, we continue our journey in the Moroccan desert in the south of the country.

Route of Thousand Kasbahs

Kasbahs are structures made of mud & straw and built behind a defensive wall, you see a lot of them in the south of Morocco.

I drive towards Tinghir via Route of Thousand Kasbahs and the RN10 road. Along the way I have beautiful views of palm trees and old kasbahs. From the campsite in Toudgha El Oulia Leo and I walk in the large palm garden and the adjacent kasbah.

Todgha Gorge

The Todgha Gorge and (dry) river are beautiful! I drive more than 20 km through the gorge and that is a fantastic ride, highly recommended!

Dades Valley

My next destination is the Dades Valley with the impressive Dades Gorge. It is an amazing route along a fairly green valley and some fantastic hairpin bends!

Monkey Fingers Canyon

On the route of the 1000 Kasbahs you will also find the Monkey Fingers Canyon! We also take a look at the kasbah at Ait Ouassif and then we walk around the campsite in Ait Arbaamia Li. This campsite is located on a hill and has 360 degree views of the surroundings, unique!

Kasbah Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate is a tourist place and the guides are already waiting at the gate of the centuries-old kasbah. After many times of saying no, I manage to see the kasbah without a guide. It is a wonderful place, I feel like I’m back in old times!

Ksar Aït-Ben Haddou

Ksar Aït-Ben Haddou is an old ksar where you can wander around perfectly, it is one large open-air museum with 100+ shops. Awesome! This ksar was also a setting for several well-known movies.

We drive towards Zagora and leave the High Atlas Mountains behind us, towards the Anti Atlas Mountains. The route is superb, around every bend I see different mountains. Sometimes it looks like a moonscape. I stop very often for photos. We spend the night between the palm trees, in total silence and with a full starry sky, crazy!!!

It’s a bit cold in the morning, we really need the sun to warm up. But I am assured that the shower is always hot at the campsite, morning and evening! Not at all, my god what a fresh start to the day, 6 degrees outside and a cold shower…

All kinds of things happen along the way, people with horse and cart, children cycling, people walking on the road, they often want a lift. I see total poverty and mud huts to live in. But I also see wealth, stone houses and sometimes even new housing estates. Yet life does not always seem easy to me in Morocco.

Zagora palm trees

The campsite in Zagora is nice, super green and I meet a lot of (travel) friends! It is a pleasant town and there are girls walking on the street who wave me goodbye. Leo and I walk among the palm trees for a few days, this is maximum enjoyment.

Last kasbah

Before we drive further west, we visit one last kasbah.

Our walking path is also used by locals who race past on bicycles, scooters and motorcycles, so be careful!

Sahara tour

What a STUNNING route through the Sahara! Camels without ropes, just walking along the road or nibbling on some greenery. Magical to see!

The route to Tata is also above expectations. The town is located on the border of Anti Atlas and Sahara. I keep seeing different mountains, shapes and colors, even dark gray sand dunes. But I enjoy the camels the most, they bounce through the landscape so relaxed and satisfied.

After four weeks of traveling around Morocco and with the coast almost in sight, I am starting the last part of my tour, Western Morocco! Are you traveling with us?
