Camper trip Ireland II the North

Slieve League

I travel through Ireland with my own camper and I have planned a month for this trip. The first half of the month I was in the south of Ireland, which was fantastic! Campertrip continued

We enjoy the incredibly beautiful nature and super friendly people! Also enjoy the many cows, bulls, sheep and nice hiking trails.

This trip we’ll skip Belfast and Dublin, I have already visited these cities before.

Forest walk

From Galway in the west, we drive a bit further north. In between I stop for lunch and a nice walk in the forest. Near the town of Headford you will find this route with all kinds of wood carvings and old winding trees.

Summer in Donegal

Donegal is a real Irish village with a castle that attracts many tourists. Spending the night in the middle of the village in the large parking lot, ideal!

I get fresh vegetables from my camper neighbor and have some nice chats, the Irish are super friendly.

Summer in Ireland is a bit chilly, it is often colder than 16 degrees and there is a little bit of rain every day. But on the days when the sun shines you can enjoy it to the fullest!

County Donegal

The next stop is Glencolumbkille, almost the westernmost village of Donegal. A wonderful tour through authentic Ireland. I take a look at the beach and I get the tip to drive back to the cliffs of Slieve League.

Slieve League

That’s great advice! Huge high cliffs in the sea, I am surprised how stunning it is here! The sun is shining, it’s a perfect day for photos. A perfect hiking trail, a few mountain sheeps and a dazzlingly blue lake in the mountains.

In the pub I meet two lovely people Paula and David, we chat for hours and it’s a great evening! Leo is completely in love with Paula. That’s why we also enjoy a nice cup of coffee together in the morning, a very good start to the day!

En route

I drive almost 2 hours to the north of Donegal and stop several times along the way to take photos. The route is amazing, even with rain!

In Meenlaragh I park near a vast beach, Leo is running around and will be tired for a while. Then it rains again for a few hours.

National Park Glenveagh

On to Glenveagh National Park, castle and gardens. The route is a road with little traffic and a deserted landscape, it reminds me of Lapland. We walk to the castle with its castle gardens. Lots of different trees, plants and colored flowers!

There are also many small mosquitoes, my first experience with midgets, oh how itchy they are! I have to fill up with water for the camper and at the same time the midgets bite (too much) 😣

Malin Head

Last part of the Wild Atlantic Way to Malin Head! This landscape reminds me of Scandinavia again. Malin Head is the most northerly in Ireland, today with sunny weather and fantastic panoramic views!

~ Northern Ireland ~

(London)Derry

In Derry we walk along the river, over the Peace Bridge and view murals. And… I finally have good internet again, hurray! Breakfast with a coffee & fresh chocolate chip cookie 😋
After breakfast we do our morning walk along the Derry river and here, like the rest of Ireland, there are colorful wildflowers everywhere along the walking path.

Causeway Coastal Route

After the Wild Atlantic Way we travel further via another coastal route; Causeway Coastal route.

Dunluce Castle, Mussenden Temple and the Giant’s Causeway are must-sees among the many attractions of the Causeway Coastal Route. I spend the night in the lively coastal town of Portstewart and stop at various viewpoints, it is an endlessly gorgeous coast.

The Giant’s Causeway is my favorite! This rock formation consists of about 40,000 basalt columns and was created by a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago. It is a great fun place, we can walk/climb over the columns and take pictures everywhere, brilliant!

Antrim City

And then the big Lake in Antrim, Lough Neagh, how relaxed it is here. The Castle Gardens & Clotworthy House are within walking distance of the lake. We stroll among the Irish retirees and everyone says a friendly hello. Total peace! A coffee with cinnamon roll and I also feel a bit like a (happy) retiree.

Mourne Mountains

Tollymore Forest Park is located at the foot of the Morne Mountains. A park with various trails for walking. Along the river I see beautiful old gates and bridges. The park has also been the setting for the series Game of Thrones.

We walk the black route of approximately 10 km with a view of the Morne Mountains. Oh, note that there are 2 black routes…. We take the wrong path and walk more than 15 km.

We go to Kilbroney Forest Park via the Morne Coastal route. Today we do the trail to the gigantic Cloughmore Stone, which weighs almost 50 tons! And on top of the mountain you can enjoy a wonderful view of the lake.

Bye bye Ireland

Emerald green Ireland is amazing and is rarely busy with tourists, even in high season.

We very much enjoyed the nice & friendly people, Leo hugged a lot during this trip.

We’re taking the boat to Scotland, will you travel with us?
