Scottish Highlands, Isle of Skye

Glencoe

After a month’s camper trip through Ireland, we take the boat to Scotland in Larne, Northern Ireland. Before we go to the Scottish highlands, I first make a stop in the southernmost tip of Scotland, Port Logan.

Lowlands

We find a relaxed camper place near Port Logan, where you can park with a view of the sea!

We take a lovely walk on the beach and walk to Port Logan on the other side.

Along the coast

We are on our way to the Isle of Skye and drive north via the coastal road. I drive the route clockwise and because I drive on the left, I have a good view of the coast!

Today we stop in the town of Largs. An unexpectedly nice place with a long boulevard and great walking beach. Also a beautiful drive along Loch Lomond wow! I can’t stop for photos, but I really enjoy it.

Pub overnight stay

We are now in the Scottish Highlands! We park at the pub today, and we can spend the night here together with a few other campers. Leo and I first take a long walk along the river. He runs like crazy and jumps through the tall grass like a Bambi.

Then Fish & Chips for me in this old pub from 1705. Dogs are very welcome in the UK and Leo is also allowed to join me in the restaurant, great!

Glen Nevis

We continue towards Glen Nevis and the route is amazing. I stop several times for photos and to walk, it is a great day. In Fort William we leave from the visitor center into the forests of Glen Nevis. It’s stunning here, what a view!

Eilean Donan Castle

Scotland is exceptionally beautiful! I drive towards Eilean Donan Castle, the route is once again breathtaking. The Donan castle is located on an island, gorgeous and touristy. Then look again for a parking spot for the night. That is not always easy in Scotland (during the high season).

Isle of Skye

The Skye Bridge is the bridge that connects the Isle of Skye to the mainland, the bridge is approximately 500 meters long. Isle of Skye is the largest island in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides archipelago.

The Old Man of Storr

The Old Man of Storr is a 55 meter high erect boulder of basalt rock and the only remnant of a 2.8 billion year old volcano. Climb and climb again via stone stairs to get to a perfect viewpoint. Awesome!! While I take pictures, Leo cuddles with other hikers.

On the way to Staffin

Then a tourist route towards Staffin, in a long line of tourists and campers we drive behind each other. Over 17 km we stop 4 times for sightseeing and we always meet the same people who hug Leo again, this is fun!

I stop at a waterfall, the beach, a beautiful cliff with another waterfall and bagpipe player! Can it be even more Scottish?

The innland

I love the emptiness and silence in Scotland. Today I don’t take a tourist route and cross the mountain from Staffin to Uig. Well, that’s highly recommended, wonderful! A single-lane road up the mountain with a few nice hairpin bends. Haha it’s very busy on top of the mountain because that’s where the Quiraing walking route starts. Strong wind and rain, not a good time for this famous hiking trail.

Take some pictures at the viewpoint and continue to Portree for groceries and diesel. Then another non-touristy route. I meander through an empty grassy landscape with sheep. Sun, clouds and occasionally rain, the sky is amazing! And over the mountain again a view of the sea, magnificent, how fun camper driving is.

Peninsula Sleat

Now I still need water, which I will fill up at the Sleat peninsula. A stunning view here, I keep taking pictures. We park for the night at a walking area and there I take even more pictures of the view. No cars, silence and beauty. Maximum enjoyment 😍

We are halfway through our Scotland trip and are now starting the North Coast 500 route all the way to the north of Scotland. Are you traveling with us?
